This I Believe; Birds vs. Worms
In ninth grade, I met my best friend. Everybody has one, right? Someone you can talk to for hours on end, someone who you can be yourself around, stands by your side, and shares life with you. And when I met mine, I really thought they would be the person who'd stick by my side no matter what, and I did truly believe that. But halfway through my sophomore year, I lost that friendship.
Everyone has been in a fight or gone through a hard break up that may have seemed to change things for the worse. Whether it be with a friend, a significant other, or even a family member. I was only 15 (not that I'm much older now) and this had been the first time I had really felt betrayed, lost, or really any harsh emotion that I completely brought upon myself.
I was devastated. I really was.
I tried talking to my friends about it, but other 15 year olds only know so much. And that much wasn't much more than what I already knew. So at that point, I was very sad, I didn't understand why it happened or what even caused it, let alone know how to deal with it.
My teacher picked up on it, so I decided some insight from an adult might help.
“Let me show you something”
He turned around and started drawing a picture on the whiteboard. He drew the ground with little worms on the surface, and birds high up above.
“You, you are the worm down here in the dirt. And that’s all you can see around you. Dirt; It’s the only thing in your vision, so its all you can think about. It's the same thing that you're doing now, surrounding yourself with only bad thoughts”.
“But the birds. The birds fly above the ground. They see the whole picture. This is just a little patch in your life, don't be stuck surrounded by all of your problems when there's so much more to see. Look at it from a birds point of view”.
After I had that conversation, I looked at my problem from a different light. I wasn't as upset anymore, and I came out of the shell of self pity I was in. I took what I learned from a bad situation, and remembered it so I could change it, (or how I viewed it) for the better. And not only that, I started applying it to other things in my life as well. and also started sharing my insight with friends who wanted advice.
I believe in looking at problems and complications in your life from a different light, because you are the only one who can change it.
