Inauguration Estimation Write Up
For this project, we were given a satellite image of what the 2008 Inauguration for President Obama looked like, shown below.
The masses of black dots show where there were people. Our job for this problem was to estimate the number of people who were present at the inauguration during the time of the photo being taken. In our groups, we found the area of the masses and estimated there were about 800,000 people.
Two habits of a mathematician that my group and I used during this problem were solving a simpler problem and generalizing. We used solving a similar problem because we broke up the original problem into smaller chunks and then put it all back together in the end to figure out our final answer. We used generalizing because we algebraically represented the problem with equations and tried a few different ways to solve the problem.
